Obviously I believe in marriage and what it stands for, that it’s powerful and wonderful and a benefit to individuals, couples…even society.  But check out this article, “Census data: Marriages in 2009 at record low level“.  It talks about a bunch of other stuff besides marriage (income level, housing report, etc.), but I think the stuff about getting hitched is interesting.

“The new figures show, among other things, that marriages fell to a record low level in 2009, with just 52 percent of adults 18 and over saying they were joined in wedlock, compared to 57 percent in 2000.  On the issue of marriage among adults 25-34, roughly 46.3 percent reported they had never wed. It was the first time the share of unmarried young adults exceeded the 44.9 percent who were married.  The recession took a dramatic toll on the institution of marriage in America last year, new figures show, with weddings for people 18 and older at the lowest ebb in over a hundred years.”

Why aren’t folks getting married?  I’m not gonna lie, I’m surprised.  You’d almost think that the marriage rate would be higher in a recession…but I guess people don’t have to get married to live together and share bills and whatnot.  They don’t talk about cohabitation, but I’d be willing to be that that’s way up!

Did you and your honey consider waiting out the bad economy to get married?  I wonder how many dudes are ready to ask their girlfriend’s to marry them, but are sweating out the recession.  I talked a lot during my planning phase about the cost of weddings, it’d be interesting to see what the economic impact of not having all of those weddings is having.  Our small budget wedding cost $11k…and a month later we went to one that cost $50k.  Those are tangible additions to a sputtering economy.  So I guess what I’m saying is, go on and get married…it’s good for the country!

The Mister is a huge Chicago Bears fan, so we went out to watch the Bears Packers game last night and I was trying to be a gamer and wear the Bears colors (orange & blue)…but he accused me of wearing yellow.  Does that look like yellow?  Hmmmpft!  The funny part was that while I was giving him grief about being color-blind, the first thing someone says to me was some comment about me wearing Packers colors.  What?!!  That’s orange, right?!

Then I got to thinking about what The Mister’s poor football life has turned into since he watches games with me.  I love the sport because I’m a coach and I enjoy watching the tactical nature of sport, but I don’t know the game in and out or anything.  So these are things I said last night while watching the game:

  • Oh my goodness, that dude is huge!  *poking with finger to get his attention*
  • Lovie needs a size bigger pants.
  • That dude sucks, why don’t they take him out?
  • Dear God, that dude is gigantic!! *The Mister rolls his eyes at this one and reminds me that they are football players*
  • Why does he keep making that same mistake?
  • Why don’t they just tackle him, he’s standing right there?

And this was just last night…every weekend there are a new series of questions for him.  He hasn’t stopped watching with me yet, so I guess that’s a good sign!

Do you watch with your honey?

I have a confession to make:  I hate these comics.  I think they’re cheesy and the characters look funny and I constantly wonder who actually likes them.  I mean someone must like them because they’ve been around forever.  Awful!  Just for giggles, I did an internet search for “who likes love is comics” and there are all sorts of fan sites.  Ugh!

Now that I’ve sufficiently explained my dislike for the Love Is comic, I thought of them last night when I came home after a terrible day at the office and The Mister was there to listen to me complain and give me hugs and had a funny movie all queued up and ready to go.  He’s pretty awesome and to me…that’s what Love Is.

So I’d planned on posting up pics of my hair so that you can see what I’m doing with it since the wedding.  I haven’t cut it, but I did get a significant trim, so it’s a bit shorter.  Though you’d never know it because I put it up everyday.  I wore it down to work last week and the other ladies marveled at how long it was and I told them that I hate the way hair feels.  It’s true!  When it’s down, it’s in my face and on my shoulders and just generally in the way…annoying!  Anyhoo, I asked The Mister to take some pics and of the ten or so that he took, only a couple turned out…sort of.  It was pretty funny though, so, here are the…

Top 5 Things That Were Said The Most While Taking These Pictures

  1. How do I work this thing?
  2. Why am I taking these pictures?
  3. Why are you putting them on your blog?
  4. Ewww…that’s ugly, take another one!
  5. How come I don’t see the fl– *click*  Dangit!

So there were lots of giggles and pictures of me mid sentence…it was pretty funny.  Anyhoo, this is what my hair looks like, though you can’t really see it (which is why we kept taking pictures).

Remember this was supposed to be a pic of my hair?  So why don’t we see any hair here?  Try again!

Too far away to see the curlies and whatnot, but this is the gist…naps swept up into a bun (though some of my bobby pins had come out).

So that’s what I’m doing…it’s good for work and easy to put up at night, so it’s working out so far!  What happened to your wedding hair?  Did you go for the big chop?  Are you keeping it long?

Our blank wall September 21, 2010

That’s The Mister watching the Bears game this weekend.  As a matter of fact, I’d just said “hey, I’m taking your picture” but he’s in the football zone so he’s just starting at the tv.  I wanted to post this picture because of that giganto blank wall behind him.  What should we do with it?

I’ll give you a quick lay of the land.  He’s sitting on our couch (and I’m taking this pic from our recliner) with his feet propped up on the coffee table and handy dandy laptop (for fantasy football updates) close by.  Behind the couch is his office area with a desk and file cabinets.  That door to the right is a closet.   So what kind of pic would go well in there?  It’s his office, but you can see it from the living room as well.  Our general color scheme in the living room is chocolate brown and a soft slate blue.  The walls are light, so I figured we should use color with our decorations (curtains are brown, carpet is blue).

We’d said that we were gonna buy something together since most of the stuff we have at the house was stuff that we’d had separately.  This would be our first jointly purchased decoration.  Soooo…we have a blank wall.  And it drives me crazy.

Any ideas?

Money: pile it, eat it, or bury it? September 19, 2010

It’s that time of the year…squirrels everywhere.  I mean everywhere!  And I just think they are too cute.  Whenever I walk around, I see squirrels darting around, eating acorns, burying acorns, saving acorns…they are on a mission.  And I can’t be the only one who wants to run around after them, right?  I love watching them and seeing their cute, furry little tails flicking in the air.

But they got me to thinking the other day that I need to be more like them.  I’m a saver by nature, but I’ve gotten away from it since the wedding.  Pre-wedding, I had five figures saved up for a rainy day (because I’m inexplicably worried about said day of rain), but post-wedding?  I’ve only got a couple pennies clanging around in there.  The Mister and I have to get to work and be like those squirrels!  We should still be able to spend some money like the squirrels still eat their acorns…but they never stop putting nuts away for the future.  Some of our money has to be buried in investments and annuities not to be touched for a while, but some of it has to be piled up (still using our squirrel metaphor here folks) in a savings account for easy access.

I think we’ve got a plan together, but this is a tough time to start thinking about saving.  Just coming off of our wedding and honeymoon…and Christmas is literally right around the corner.  *sigh*  What do you and your honey do about rainy days?

“You’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?” –Dirty Harry

I’d say that things have been going well for me lately.  I’ve got a job I love, married a fabulous dude…I could go on and on.  But do you know when I knew for sure that my life was on the right track?  When The Mister and I went to Buffalo Wild Wings and I won this:

That’s right playa…50 free wings!!  Yippee!!!  Here’s how it went down.  The Mister and I always sit at the bar when we go there, so I saw the dude pick the paper out of the bucket and I just knew (I could feel it!) that he was going to call my name.

Me: He picked my sheet!
The Mister: How can you tell…did you see your name?
Me: No, I can just feel it…I’m gonna win! *bouncing up and down in my seat*
The Mister: *skeptical* Did you see your name or something?
Me: *heavy sigh* Noooo, I can just tell…he’s gonna call my name, just wait!
Dude behind bar: *looking around* Dawn, is there a Dawn?
Me: *fist pumping* Yaaaay!

So that’s it y’all…I’m a winner and get to stuff myself full of wings soon and very soon.  Have you gotten lucky lately?  (that sounds funny, but you know what I mean!)
