Traveling woman: musings from the airport December 17, 2010

I’m on day two of a four day business trip right now.  It’s a convention-type trip with lots of classes available to take…and yes, I’m one of those nerdy types that goes to all of the classes that I can!  But this post isn’t about the classes, it’s about my time at the airport…it’s always a trip.

**Six things I saw or heard at the airport yesterday**

  • From an engaged couple waiting to get on the plane:  After the woman gave a When Harry Met Sally-type request for something to drink to her fiancé, he comes back and they get to talking.  I don’t know what all was said, but I did hear the woman say, “I own you…that’s what this means”, while she flashed her ring around.  Really?  Wow.  I’m sure he secretly wanted to rip that ring off and go sprinting down the airport hallway and right out the door.
  • TSA guy: after having to do the creepy body scan thing (ick), one of my bags got selected for a check.  After pulling out all of the things that were in there, the TSA guy told me I had a well-packed bag.  Do you know how many bags those dudes must see?!  BOOM!  If I ever need a career change, I’m positive I could be a professional organizer.
  • Optically challenged lady: I’m admittedly blind without my glasses…it’s actually a bit embarrassing how little I can see without them.  I don’t think, though, that I’m quite as bad as this chick trying to work on her laptop.  She was hunched over, laptop held at eye-level with one hand, typing with the other…and it was literally three inches from her face.  Like, picture the laptop open and her chin directly above the space key and you’ll know what I’m talking about.  You can make the font bigger lady!
  • Incredible expanding bag: in more “well-packed bag” news, I got clothes for 4 days and 3 nights (business cas during the day, jeans and relaxing clothes at night) into one carry on!  And let’s not even talk about my plethora of snacks.  Woo hoo!
  • Vera Bradley bags: don’t sleep on Vera!  I’ve got a tote bag (the one that the TSA dude went through) and it holds tons of stuff.  There are lots of pockets and they’re well made, so I never worry about how heavy it is.  Plus I’m not the only one…lots of ladies were carrying them around.
  • Bonus: this one isn’t in the airport, but is there anything better than the realization that your flight isn’t full???  Oh em gee, when I realized that I had the whole row to myself, I almost jumped up and clicked my heels together.

Anyhoo, that was my airport experience…do y’all know what I mean?

**Update: the Jaguar dude emailed me back and was like, I misquoted you…it’s $190.  I guess that settles it, huh?**

Since The Mister informed me that he wanted to have a car and driver take us from our ceremony to our reception, I’ve been hard at work searching out our options.  Since we’re doing it, I wanna do it up right!  We’ll be in this vehicle for the half an hour it’ll take to get from our chapel to the reception site…and maybe it can be in a few pics?

Here are my top two options and I’m looking for opinions here please!  The Rolls Royce is choice #1.  I like it because it’s an old school looking car…but it’s also more expensive than option #2.  $400 will get me the car and includes gratuity, red carpet, champagne w/engraved glasses that’ll have our names and wedding dates on them.

Then there’s option #2…the Jaguar.  It’s pretty fancy and sporty, I’m wondering if The Mister will like this one better because of that.  It’s iPod capatible and if we want, we can watch a DVD on the way to the reception in there too!  It’s $250 including driver gratuity, red carpet, “just married” signs, and champagne.

So what do you think?  Old school fancy or modern fancy?

I was sitting here chatting with The Mister and was saying how I thought we could just catch a ride to our reception and here’s the rest of the story as Paul Harvey would say:

The Mister:  I thought we were getting a car and driver.

Me: Well, I was thinking we could just hop in with someone…we’re all going to the same place anyway.

The Mister: But I thought we said we would get a car and driver.

Me:  Yeah, that’s what we said initially, but we could save money here and just set it up to catch a ride down to the mansion.

The Mister:  It’s just that I really wanted a car and driver.

Me:  Yeah?  So you want me to get a car and driver?

The Mister: *nodding*

So we’re getting a car and driver…he’s persistent, that guy!  I went on a job interview once and they sent a car and driver…I felt pretty baller, I’m not gonna lie.  We’ll get something like this hopefully:

What are you and your guy doing for the big day?  Are you going low-key and thumbing it to your reception with some family members or are you getting a limo?:

Or how about the ever popular party bus?  This one got ruled out for us because everyone’s married with kiddos…we’d need a school bus to take everyone!

This is what I wanted initially, until I realized that I’d have to offer up my first born for how much it’d cost…but you wouldn’t be able to tell me nothing if we rolled up in this vintage hotness:

So what are y’all doing?  How long are you keeping the car/bus/limo?  Will it just drop you off at the reception site and that’ll be that?
